Killer Headlines for Web Content – Book Review

Killer Headlines for Web Content, by Nick Osborne is an e-book by WordTracker.

It is more of a report than a book, at 65 pages. This is a problem in the sense that it limits the amount of content it covers, but it also makes it a quick read.

The book proposes to cover a few approaches so that you can write better headlines.

It does have good suggestions – mostly the classic approaches (numbered lists, fear, how to, etc) – but it does feel quite oriented for news and generic articles, rather than business content. It does mention this in the Introduction, and says that these headlines work, and it is your job to fit it to your pages and articles to make them work.

I feel that the approaches were reasonably well covered, and it did give me a few ideas. I might even look at my notes when I'm looking for a good headline.

At the current discounted price – US$19 – I feel that the book is worth its price, but I wouldn't recommend it at its full price.

WooThemes WordPress Themes Review

I've been setting up a few new sites with WordPress, and the premium themes I bought over time have been a huge source of frustration.

Every single one of them had huge bugs – clipped sections, missing images, and more. On my main blog, I had to edit the code to fix several issues.

So it was a very pleasant surprise when I installed Inspire, from WooThemes. Not only everything worked perfectly, their menu system is particularly good and well organized – instead of the huge pile of unrelated options I've seen on other premium themes.

They have very nice documentation too.

While I was writing this review, I realized Inspire had a new update (looks like they are always getting updated). The site had somehow removed it from my account. I contacted support on a Sunday afternoon, and by Sunday night they had answered and corrected the problem. Awesome!

Very recommended. I will definitely be replacing the theme for this blog when I can.

MailChimp: easily getting more data from your subscribers

Interesting article on how to get more data from your subscribers on MailChimp.

What I liked about this idea is that you get the advantage of minimal initial form fields – this increasing completion – while still asking for the data later with minimum extra work.
